Add or remove Ontario’s 13% HST on any amount, with the federal and provincial split shown.
Ontario’s HST rate is 13%, made up of 5% federal GST and 8% provincial tax. Some goods and services are zero-rated or exempt, so this calculator suits standard-rated sales. Confirm current rates and rules with the Canada Revenue Agency before you file anything official.
Why I keep an Ontario HST calculator handy
A client in Mississauga once sent me a purchase order for $2,260 “all in.” I needed my actual fee before tax, and I had to work backward. A good Ontario HST calculator makes that a two-second job. By hand, it is an easy place to slip.
The answer was $2,000 plus $260 of HST. I got there by dividing $2,260 by 1.13, not by subtracting 13%. That small difference matters on every invoice.
How the Ontario HST calculator works
Ontario charges a 13% Harmonized Sales Tax. That rate combines two pieces:
- Federal GST: 5%. This part goes to the federal government.
- Ontario portion: 8%. This part goes to the province.
The calculator above shows both pieces separately, so you can see exactly where the tax goes.
How to use the Ontario HST calculator
- Enter your amount in the box.
- Choose “Add HST” if you start from a price before tax. Choose “Remove HST” if you start from a total that already includes tax.
- Read the breakdown: the price before HST, the federal and provincial portions, and the total.
Real example: On a C$1,000 invoice, HST is C$130, made up of C$50 federal and C$80 provincial. The total is C$1,130. Working backward, C$1,130 divided by 1.13 returns exactly C$1,000.
When you must charge HST in Ontario
Most small businesses must register for GST/HST once their taxable sales pass C$30,000 over four consecutive calendar quarters. Below that, registration is optional. After you register, you charge HST on standard-rated sales. You can check the details on the CRA site linked in the note above.
A mistake to avoid
Many people charge only the 5% federal GST on an Ontario invoice. That leaves out the 8% provincial portion, so the invoice comes up short. Always apply the full 13% for standard-rated Ontario sales.
