Calculate Florida’s 6% base state sales tax on any amount, add or remove it instantly.
This calculates Florida’s base statewide rate of 6%. Counties can add their own discretionary surtax on top, typically between 0.5% and 1.5%, so most areas land somewhere between 6.5% and 7.5% combined. Verify your specific county rate with the Florida Department of Revenue for anything official.
The county surtax that caught a client of mine off guard
A client based in Miami once pushed back on an invoice, pointing out that the tax I’d calculated using the 6% Florida rate didn’t match what they saw on their own local receipts. Turns out Miami-Dade County adds its own discretionary surtax on top of the state rate — a detail that’s easy to miss if you only look up “Florida sales tax” and stop at the first number you find.
How Florida sales tax actually works
Florida charges a base state rate of 6% on most goods and services. On top of that, individual counties can adopt their own discretionary sales surtax, which typically adds somewhere between 0.5% and 1.5%, depending on the county.
- State rate — 6%. Applies uniformly across Florida.
- County discretionary surtax — variable, usually 0.5–1.5%. Not every county has one, and the ones that do set their own rate independently.
The Florida Department of Revenue administers this and publishes the current surtax rate for each county.
Real example: A $300 purchase at the base 6% state rate alone comes to $318. That same $300 purchase in a county with a 1% discretionary surtax (7% combined) comes to $321 — a small but real difference that adds up on larger transactions.
How to use this calculator
- Enter your amount.
- Choose “Add tax” or “Remove tax.”
- Read your result — this reflects Florida’s 6% base state rate, not any county surtax.
Since county surtaxes are common but not universal across Florida, treat this as your baseline and check your specific county’s rate if the exact figure matters for an invoice or filing.
