Nova Scotia’s HST rate is 14%, made up of 5% federal GST and 9% provincial tax. The province lowered the rate from 15% in 2025. Some goods and services are zero-rated or exempt, so this calculator suits standard-rated sales. Confirm current rates with the Canada Revenue Agency before you file anything official.

Why the Nova Scotia HST calculator needs the new rate

I once quoted a Halifax client using the 15% rate I had memorized. Their accountant replied politely and pointed out that the rate had dropped. It was now 14%. My quote was $10 too high on every $1,000, and I had to resend it.

That mistake is easy to make. For years, Nova Scotia charged 15%, so many people still carry that number in their heads. A Nova Scotia HST calculator that uses the current rate removes the guesswork.

How the Nova Scotia HST calculator works

Nova Scotia charges a 14% Harmonized Sales Tax on standard-rated sales. That rate has two pieces:

  • Federal GST: 5%. This part goes to the federal government.
  • Nova Scotia portion: 9%. This part goes to the province.

The calculator above shows both pieces on separate lines, so you can see exactly where the tax goes.

How to use the Nova Scotia HST calculator

  1. Enter your amount in the box.
  2. Choose “Add HST” to start from a price before tax. Choose “Remove HST” to start from a total that already includes tax.
  3. Read the breakdown: the price before HST, both tax portions, and the total.

Real example: On a C$1,000 invoice, HST is C$140, made up of C$50 federal and C$90 provincial. The total is C$1,140. At the old 15% rate, the same invoice came to C$1,150, so the change saves C$10 per C$1,000. Working backward, C$1,140 divided by 1.14 returns C$1,000.

Do you have to charge HST in Nova Scotia?

Most small businesses must register for GST/HST once their taxable sales pass C$30,000, either in one calendar quarter or over four consecutive quarters. Below that, registration is optional. The CRA’s registration page explains the exact timing.

A mistake to avoid

Do not copy an old invoice template without checking the rate. Many templates still show 15%. Update the rate to 14% for standard-rated Nova Scotia sales, and your totals will match your client’s records.

Frequently asked questions

What is the HST rate in Nova Scotia?
Nova Scotia’s HST rate is 14%. That combines the 5% federal GST with a 9% provincial portion. The province lowered the rate from 15% in 2025.
How do I calculate HST backward from a total?
Divide the total by 1.14 to get the price before HST. Then subtract that price from the total to find the HST. The calculator does this when you choose “Remove HST.”
Which other provinces still charge 15%?
New Brunswick, Newfoundland and Labrador, and Prince Edward Island charge 15% HST. Check the CRA’s rate table for the latest figures.
Do I charge HST on every sale in Nova Scotia?
Not always. Some goods and services, such as basic groceries, are zero-rated. Check the CRA’s guidance for your specific product or service.
Does the new rate apply to invoices I sent earlier?
The rate that applied when the sale happened is the one that counts. For anything near the change date, confirm the timing rules with the CRA or an accountant.
