Quebec charges 5% federal GST and 9.975% Quebec Sales Tax (QST). Both apply to the price before tax, not to each other. Some goods and services are zero-rated or exempt, so this calculator suits standard-rated sales. Confirm current rules with Revenu Québec before you file anything official.

Why a Quebec sales tax calculator needs two tax lines

An old guide once told me to apply Quebec’s QST on top of the GST-inclusive price. I followed it and quoted a client C$1,154.74 on a C$1,000 job. The correct total was C$1,149.75. That small gap made my quote look wrong, and I had to explain why.

The guide was out of date. Since 2013, Quebec applies QST to the price before GST. A Quebec sales tax calculator that follows the current rule keeps your quotes accurate.

How the Quebec sales tax calculator works

Quebec charges two taxes on most standard-rated sales:

  • GST: 5%. This is the federal tax that applies across Canada.
  • QST: 9.975%. This is Quebec’s own provincial tax.

Together they make 14.975%. The calculator applies both taxes to the same price before tax. It then shows each one on its own line.

How to use the Quebec sales tax calculator

  1. Enter your amount.
  2. Choose “Add tax” to start from a price before tax. Choose “Remove tax” to start from a total that already includes both taxes.
  3. Read the breakdown: price before tax, GST, QST, and the total.

Real example: On a C$1,000 invoice, GST is C$50 and QST is C$99.75. The total is C$1,149.75. To work backward, divide C$1,149.75 by 1.14975 and you return exactly C$1,000. Subtracting 14.975% from the total would give the wrong answer.

Two registrations, not one

Quebec handles its taxes differently from other provinces. Revenu Québec administers both the GST and the QST for Quebec-based businesses, and QST needs its own registration. The small supplier threshold is C$30,000 in taxable sales. The Revenu Québec registration page explains the steps.

If you sell digital products to Quebec customers from outside the province, special registration rules can apply. Our guide on selling digital products internationally covers the wider picture.

A mistake to avoid

Do not add GST first and then apply QST to the new total. That was the pre-2013 method, and it overcharges. Apply both taxes to the price before tax. Also remember that the rate differs from Ontario, which charges a single 13% HST, so never reuse a rate from another province.

For every province on one page, use the Canada GST/HST Calculator. Compare Quebec with the HST provinces on our Ontario HST calculator and Nova Scotia HST calculator pages. Frequently asked questions

What is the sales tax rate in Quebec?
Quebec charges 5% GST plus 9.975% QST, for a combined rate of 14.975% on most standard-rated sales.
Is QST calculated on top of GST?
No. Since 2013, QST applies to the price before GST. Both taxes use the same starting price, so neither tax is charged on the other.
How do I calculate GST and QST backward from a total?
Divide the total by 1.14975 to get the price before tax. The calculator does this when you choose “Remove tax.”
Do I need to register for QST separately?
Yes. QST registration is separate from GST registration and goes through Revenu Québec. The small supplier threshold is C$30,000, but check Revenu Québec for the exact rules.
Is Quebec’s tax higher than Ontario’s?
Yes. Quebec’s combined 14.975% is higher than Ontario’s 13% HST. Our guide on GST vs HST in Canada compares every province.
