Why we built a tax calculator
I got tired of googling “VAT calculator” and landing on a page covered in banner ads. Some calculators asked for my email before showing a result. Others only worked after clicking through a paywall. Most of them also only covered one country. That was a real problem for me, since I deal with UK VAT, Australian GST, and US sales tax in the same week, sometimes the same day. So I built the tax calculator I actually wanted. One place, four countries, no nonsense.
What this tax calculator does
This site holds a small set of standalone calculators. There’s a UK VAT calculator, an Australia GST calculator, a Canada GST/HST calculator, and a US sales tax calculator. Each one does a single job well: add or remove tax from an amount, using current published rates. There’s no account creation, There’s no data collection on the calculators themselves. There’s no “premium” tier hiding basic math behind a paywall. You open the page, type a number, and get an answer.
What this tax calculator isn’t
This tool isn’t a substitute for an accountant. I’m not a tax professional, and this site doesn’t offer tax advice. Each calculator uses the standard published rate at the time it was added. Tax law changes. Exemptions exist. Local rules vary more than a simple calculator can capture. If you’re filing anything official — a VAT return, a business tax filing, anything with real financial consequences — treat this tax calculator as a quick estimate. Verify the actual numbers with HMRC, the ATO, the CRA, your state’s Department of Revenue, or a qualified accountant, depending on which one applies to you.
Who runs this site
This site is run independently by Mujtaba, based in US. It started as a personal tool for my own freelance work and grew into something I figured other freelancers and small business owners dealing with cross-border tax might find useful too.
